Looks like Episode 100 to be aired on March 21 will be conclusion, though I hope to be able to continue re-watching PALF on www.NBC.com app and on You Tube. When not waking up at midnight to watch PALF "live" may be able to write more frequently!
Episode theme could be "Let's make a deal": Negotiations, manipulations, and pretense.
GEORGE tells Leticia that he and Carmen "nos reconciliamos y vamos a volver a vivir juntos (he kisses Carmen, who wasn't expecting it). LETI pretends to be pleased: Ay, que bueno. LETI: Pues bienvenida. Que bueno. Ay que padre (but her brain is ticking, trying to come up with plan to prevent.
(When lots of GREEN appears in PALF--in recent Ep. Leti was given nail polish "green for envy"--I thought of favorite book that both children and adults can enjoy, 1961 THE SECRET WORLD OF OG by Pierre Berton; I prefer the original illustrations by William Winter seen above): "the Pollywog's agile little brain was ticking like a dollar watch, working on a Grand Escape Plan, while he pretended innocently to eat his Pablum and milk. It was his scheme to...steal all the jelly beans...Then he would head for the Mexican border as fast as his four legs would carry him". Polly's oldest sister "Penny had even written a letter in her large round hand to the local television station, urging that Lucy Lawless be made into a television series. She had a feeling that it would be even better than I Was a Teen Age Private Eye which was her favourite at the moment. Maybe, she thought, they could even get Alfred La Verne, the 14 year old singing sensation, to play in it. This combination of the world's greatest author and the world's greatest singer sent a delicious little thrill down Penny's spine." Thought of that passage when wondering if Guy might ever play someone like Pindar Payton in GONE-AWAY LAKE and RETURN TO GONE-AWAY by Elizabeth Enright, one of my favorite authors, niece of Frank Lloyd Wright.)
Juancho takes Aurelio to stay with him in Emiliano's house. When Emi comes in, Juancho brusquely ask him what's he is doing there (like Juancho is owner and has a right to ask). Emi asks about bruise on his face; Juancho pretends he was hit by an automatic electric-eye door--in fact it was thug's fist: "yo que soy re-bruto, me pege" (remember Scarecrow who wants a brain?) Emi is taken aback when told Juancho invited his pal Aurelio to stay, conceding it's good for his guest to help others, but not by using other people's possessions. Juancho touts how "compalle" knows about repairing stuff like drains, plumbing, electric work to help with remodeling.
Trying to calm down Emi, Juancho tells him "calmontes montes" https://www.tellmeinspanish.com/vocab/calm-down-in-spanish/
At first it looks like "gentle" Ghandis will give in, but then Emi gives ultimatum: "menos mal tenemos una puerta...bastante ancha en donde caben dos compadres!" On their way out the door with their belongings, Aurelio and Juancho remark to themselves how sad Yuli will be to hear they've left. Meditating Emi, overhearing, reconsiders; now he offers to let them stay out of "amistad" for Yuli (who otherwise would not have motive to visit there again) tho protective papa is on alert. Smitten young man "explains"--or rather, pretends--that his concern for his guests was lack at times of water and light in the house. Men go upstairs with their stuff, Juancho claiming right side of bed, while dazed Emi wonders what just happened (words Andy used when Clio threw a public fit in previous episode).
Roco and Robert look around for clues in room of Aristides, overhear him and Maria arguing, learn they were to have married but he left her at altar (i.e. jilted her; she snipes she'd have given him "un diario"--an engagement calendar or memorandum book--so he could've remembered the date). Later Roco and Maria negotiate about boy investigating Aristides; in exchange, he asks for payment of a dollar a day, to which she agrees, but holds off on helping dispose of broccolli his mother tries to feed him until he finds interesting information. "Sale y vale". Mute Robert is amused by the bargaining; he's also touched by their concern about him, whether he looks hungry.
Gina gives money to skull-faced henchman of "polleros" who are extorting her using hope she may get counterfeit documents so she can pass as legal resident in USA. He demands interest because she was behind on one payment. She later tells Tenoch her dilemma; he advises Gina cut her losses and return to her baby in Cartegena, Colombia (makes me think of CAFE CON AROMA DE MUJER--is it purely coincidence that several points of Gina's story will be similar to Gaviota's?), so little boy won't be left without both father and mother, forget about Kevin who disappeared: "Por que no le haces un favor y dejas de pensar en fantasmas?" (Seem significant that Gina wears gold earrings like wedding rings & and creepy henchman has black studs in ears--a style stressed later when worn by another male character who turns out to be sinister--might mean "has ears plugged", won't listen to pleas of others? Just noticed ARISTIDES told Maria: "te quise explicar y no quieres oir"...)
At his restaurant, Tenoch asks for second chance with Margarita after making a fool of himself by getting drunk. He invites her out to a fancy restaurant, which she refuses saying she wouldn't feel comfortable. (She drinks water.) But because he's been kind to Pedro and Carmen in giving them work and place to stay, she says yes to having meal with him; they debate about when. TENOCH: Hoy? MARGARITA: Mas despacio, Tenoch. (Cruz brothers clearly share gift of "poeta interior" as Carmen will say of George--to me, professional scriptwriter does also share something of physical appearance of William "Bill" Shakespeare, tho probably isn't intentional. GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ-look also going on with George's disordered curled locks)
KURT shows Tania his solution to problem of where to find voice for Clio: movie clip of Andy and diva dubbed with Carmen singing.
You're a genius. KURT: I love you. TANIA: I love you too. (she runs off)
Carmen and George talk in lower level of his study (where he dreams up plots & character motivations for his movies) in front of green plants. GEORGE: No, no, imposible.
(Favorite parts of novelas are scenes when lovers struggle to hide, fight against their mutual attraction--fans love tension of "seeing them suffer", knowing romantic reconciliation(s) will eventually take place! In future, Leti will describe to co-conspirator trying to separate pair that enamored couple are like "imanes"--magnets--which indeed seems represented physically in one scene preceding this remark.)
Tenoch and Margarita sit at outdoors table cafe; he proposes toast: Quiero brindar por esto bello que siento desde la promera vez que te vi...Porque nunca se vaya ese sentimiento. Por nosotros y por las segundas oportunidades. Salud. (he dumps his drink under palm tree) MARGA smiles, laughs.
Many references to water and wetness suggest Cruz family element is water. (Importance of metaphoric images is something that translators of subtitles seem unaware of. Remark in future by Juancho to Aurelio that they are "mojado"--"wet backs" is bleeped out, which makes as much sense as bleeping a word like penicillin for sound of component part. Bowdlerism on app version is inconsistent; in distant future, Kurt is allowed to say out loud adjectival form of "f-word" applied to useless or idiot detective he hires.)
George and Carmen join to break news to his ex and kids: GEORGE: Pues por eso queria que lo escucharan de mi boca. Carmen y yo decidimos retomar nuestros planes de boda. LETI: Come on guys, quiten esa cara. (Paz jumps as if getting electric shock) LETI losing her cool calm tone: Como que manana? PAZ: Si daddy.
Felicidades (the look on faces of George & Carmen!!)
In contrast, Tommy truly does seem to feel what his sister and mom are only giving lipservice to. TOMY Bueno, pues, bienvenida de regreso a casa, Carmen, y felicidades. CARMEN: Gracias. CARMEN: Orale. (word that has many meanings listed in book SMART SPANISH FOR TONTOS AMERICANOS--perhaps retitled 3000 Spanish Words and Phrases They Won't Teach You in School--by Eleanor Hamer under "Stand alone slang expressions") TOMMY: Felicidades, Dad. GEORGE grins: Gracias hijo. TOMMY: Bueno, bye. (Boy is again wearing tiger design sweater with blue accents--which might signal he's on his father's side)
Perdoname. GEORGE: No. No tienes por que disculparte. Estamos haciendo lo correcto, hmm? (Carmen puts her hand in his. They smile.) In fact, "getting to know", understand, accept and value new family members will proceed for remainder of novela, like in The KING & I movie song "getting to know you, getting know all about you".
----------------------------
Poolside at Green Hills country club, Yuli puts ice on Lara's face where Tommy accidently hit her when trying to hit Alan. Noticing Lara looking at Alan nearby, Yuli excuses herself to use "el bano de senoritas; si necesitas cualquier cosa, me echas un grito. Al cabo que gritas muy bien." (Alan wears white shirt with red trousers and black cloth shoes; Lara wears pastel rainbow tie-dye shirt--maybe one I noticed later is souvenir with name of Venice Beach, area of Los Angeles which carries out theme of Hollywood artifice, as partly was built as copy of canals in Venice, complete with gondala rides.) Lara tells Alan she was waiting for him to confess on his own about photos of her that he sent Tommy. LARA: No es un invento eh? Yo lo vi con mis proprios ojos.
Slick Alan spins it so he'd look like he was so thrilled by their experience, that he just had to share his happiness with the world. But Lara feels both boys are using her as a trophy, not as person with feelings and rights that should be respected by others.
In George's studio, Leti is reflected in glass fronts of framed TACOS Y TIROS movie posters on wall of stairway. She also is using location--where screenwriter creates his fictional stories--to develop plots of her own. No seas bruto. ("Goma" meaning rubber, might refer to tires--and therefore PALF's wheels and roads metaphor).
LETI: No importa. JUANCHO: Tu me ayudas, yo te auydo. JUANCHO: Un secuestro? (Commercial break)
Leti's plan is to pretend Juancho has been kidnapped, so Carmen would come to his rescue--altho she's angry at uncle, he's still family, and she wouldn't want him killed. Wedding would be canceled so Juancho could be rescued, ransom money would go pay debt to el Perrote (Big Dog), Leti would get back access to George's money and she would pay off Carmen, whom she doesn't believe is marrying George for love, having eves-dropped on couple talking about marriage so Carmen can get her visa.
CARMEN: Negar a mi familia? Como? GEORGE: No exactamente. Mira, solo vas a evitar presentarlo. Y si para eso necesitan mi nacionalitda, mi apellido, mi dinero, lo que sea...(she suddenly embraces him, he returns her hug tenderly)
Tania urges Andy to persuade Clio to agree having Carmen be her voice, tho he's of opinion it's a "Mission Impossible". Manager explains how this could be to his advantage: if Carmen doesn't need to marry his father to stay in the country, Andy would have time to develop a relationship with her--which wouldn't be as Carmen's step son--but he states he won't "jugarle chueco con mi papa".
Tenoch takes Margarita back to Cruz home in BLUE car. At first she turns down his offer to take her out again: Mis hijos que van a decir? (backtracks on seeing her expression) o en un "no", pues no? MARGA: Pues mejor en un "tal vez". He abruptly kisses her in delight, then quickly apologizes. Perdon, no me quise molestarte. MARGA: No me molesto. ( Tenoch looks crestfallen.) Pero el domingo no guiso. Asi que lo espero aqui temprano.
TANIA rushes over to Cruz home where she is shocked to learn the "happy news". TANIA: Como, como que te cases manana? Quiero decir, asi, tan pronto?
TANIA (not directly answering his query): No me ofendas, George. Me crees capaz de caer tan bajo? GEORGE: Lo siento. GEORGE: No. No. He asks her to invite "toda la prensa a la boda" so everyone will know that it's "real", but she refuses his 2nd request to help organize wedding to make it something "especial"; like his friend cosmetic surgeon Don, she doesn't want to get involved in anything against the law: "Si necesitas una complice en esta locura, no voy a ser yo. George is upset Don and Wes don't believe he is marrying for love, saying in English: "Man, did you not hear? Es un acto de amor." After such an emotional response, Wes tells his friend planned marriage is not for convenience: "This is a real one".
On her way out after talking with George, Tania tells Carmen of offer by studio to again start process to get her visa--if singer will provide on-screen voice for Clio. Tania asks Carmen not to tell George "yet", giving excuse that Clio hasn't yet agreed to the deal. Craftily, Tania casually presses wedge to separate the couple, saying "George me cuenta todo--me tiene mucho mas confianza que a su familia....Yo lo que quiero es ayudarle para que te quedes aqui en L.A. y no hagas nada que no quieres (suggesting without stating explicitly that Carmen now has another option than marriage with George). Tania's advice for "cruzando los dedos" that Clio will accept could have double meaning--crossing fingers can signify a hope something will come true--and is also done when telling lies.
OMG. Bye boda. LETI: Tu no vas a llamar Immigration, okay? PAZ: Why?
PAZ (laughs) Mom! De cuando te importan esos rancheritos? LETI: No, no me importan. PAZ: Yes yes I'll give you the cash, pero mi tarjeta nunca mas. (Real reason Leti won't turn in Jurados might be that with nothing left to lose, Juancho would tell George all about her skeletons in the closet.)
After withdrawing $2000 her mother asked for (to give Juancho), Paz stops by country club and tells Alan that photos of Lara asleep in his bed are not sufficient proof he won bet--he could have gotten her drunk and put her there. After he goes, she calls him "Loser".
Andy standing outside Clio's Hollywood Hills house is reflected in his phone when talking to Tania. Clio's refusal to go to her door to see Andy or answer his phone calls worries him, but Tania dismisses as "typica drama de diva". Andy is right to be concerned--Clio's therapist warns actress she needs to take her medication for depression.
Reflected in dining room table, George, Carmen, Yuli, Margarita and Mama Rosa look subdued (or depressed themselves), talk about wedding planned for next day.
Gearge tells her that after wedding, he doesn't want them to work as servants: Yo solo acceptaran because they insisted pero ahora que Carmen yo nos vamos a casar, no pueden seguir trabajando.
Later that night, George goes to his bedroom as Carmen is about to leave it. CARMEN: Pues--tu roncas. Me va entender. GEORGE: A ver Carmen.
